Best Served on the Streets: World Street Food Congress to return to Manila

By ISABELLA OLIVARES

Dear foodies and adventurous eaters, clear your calendars because the World Street Food Congress is slated to return to Metro Manila from May 31 to June 4, 2017! The five-day food festival, which will be held at Sunset Avenue corner Asian Drive, SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, will be showcasing heritage street food by 35 hawkers from over 10 countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, Mexico, Germany, USA and, of course, the Philippines.

This year’s World Street Food Congress (WSFC), which carries the theme “Re-Imagine Possibilities,” will also feature cooking demonstrations, a pitch box hackathon and a world street food dialogue with California Institute of America’s Greg Drescher, Michelin-starred chefs Malcolm Lee of Singapore and Andy Yang of Thailand, and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain.

Leading the Philippine contingent this year is Chef Sau del Rosario (Café Fleur and 25 Seeds), whose team will be cooking up local specialties such as egg and longganisa empanadas from Ilocos, lamb monggo from Davao and sisig paella from Pampanga.

“Philippine cuisine has been launched in the international market, and we are very excited for WSFC 2017 to once again feature the dynamism of our country through our heritage food,” says Tourism Promotions Board Philippines’ (TPB) Cesar Montano. TPB has partnered with Singapore-based Makansutra (S) Pte Ltd, the company responsible for WSFC, to make this year’s edition of the culinary jamboree possible.

So mark your calendars and prepare your stomachs. WSFC 2017, here we come!
