Caritas Manila’s digital telethon to fund college scholarship program

Scholarship is open to poor but deserving students nationwide, but priority will be given to incoming college students and those taking up vocational-technical courses from the country’s poorest provinces and from among the urban poor in Metro Manila. The digital telethon is set on Monday, September 13.

“Education is the best and most effective way to fight poverty,” said Caritas Manila Executive Director Fr. Anton Pascual. “We believe that the future servant leaders of the country will come from the poor.”

With these words, Caritas Manila, the lead social service and development ministry of the Catholic Church, welcomed donors, as it raises funds for its scholarship program via a digital telethon on September 13, Monday, from 7 am to 6 pm, over Radyo Veritas 846 AM radio station with a livestream on www.veritas846.ph.

A bright future awaits these Caritas Manila’s YSLEP scholars
Scholars who graduate later on are encouraged to pay it forward by someday becoming YSLEP donors themselves.

The proceeds from the digital telethon will fund 5,000 scholarships under Caritas Manila’s Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) for school year 2022.  The scholarship is open to poor but deserving students nationwide. Priority is given to college students and those taking up vocational-technical courses from the country’s poorest provinces and from among the urban poor in Metro Manila. Over 20,000 students have benefitted from YSLEP since 2017.

A unique value added feature of YSLEP is Caritas Manila Scholars Association (CAMASA), a community of Caritas Manila graduate scholars. All YSLEP graduates automatically become members of CAMASA. Caritas Manila continues to monitor them after graduation to ensure that they are gainfully employed and transitioning out of poverty, and that they remain active in church and community services. Each graduate scholar is also encouraged to pay it forward by becoming YSLEP donors.

Beneficiaries are the country’s poor but deserving students from low-income families in Metro Manila and the provinces
Serving with a smile, YSLEP scholars distribute relief goods to poor families living in remote areas of the country.
