Swiss artists take centerstage at ongoing art exhibit

Jürg Casserini, a self-taught artist who has gained mastery over the use of found objects, is one of the featured artists in “Swiss Connection,” an ongoing art show at Galerie Hans Brumann in Makati.

There’s art to be discovered in found objects. For the whole month of March, Bohol-based Swiss artist Jürg Casserini is one of the featured artists in “Swiss Connection,” an exhibit at Galerie Hans Brumann at the Lower Ground Floor, Legaspi Parkview Condominium, 134 Legaspi corner Carlos Palanca Streets, Legaspi Village, Makati.

Casserini, born in Thun, Switzerland, is a self-taught artist with a mastery of found objects, mixed media and acrylic. He is a lover of nature and has brought out the beauty in otherwise mundane objects he picks up along the shores of Bohol which is now his second home.

His Bangka series shows how battered pieces of the local fishing boat come together into beautiful compositions with the vivid colors of the flotsam naturally preserved by seawater. The artist also saw potential in the waste product of copper smelting. This led to his Black Slag collection with the dark glassy industrial waste serving as backdrop to colorful drips of acrylic or brightly colored objects. Casserini also dabbles in acrylic and mounts interesting pieces of driftwood into unique sculptural works.

Two other artists share the spotlight in Swiss Connection. Jörg Stäehli paints the landscape of the majestic Jungfrau summit in his native Switzerland using the alla prima oil technique where wet paint is applied to still wet paint then either left as is or touched up with a brush, spatula or palette knife in just one seating.

Samantha Aragon-Kaspar, a young Swiss-Filipina has a keen interest on flora and fauna and biodiversity and is a one of the very few artists who expertly paints on piña fabric. One of her piña-seda creations was included in New York Fashion Arts Autism Benefit Show in 2017.
