Francis Libiran’s barong finds a fitting human canvas on Filipino-American Darren Criss

The leading designer is bringing the barong—a symbol of Filipino identity and pride—onto the world stage, keeping its cultural significance alive not only in the Philippines but globally. At the premiere of Maybe Happy Ending, multi-awarded Hollywood star Darren Criss wore a custom barong by Libiran, symbolizing his Filipino roots while connecting the traditional garment with the musical’s futuristic themes.

This barong featured elements of the mythological Sarimanok, symbolizing good fortune, and colors derived from the Philippine flag, making it a meaningful representation of heritage.

Libiran’s barong designs celebrate Filipino culture, showcasing its significance globally. Beyond clothing, his creations are known to promote heritage and national pride, symbolizing Filipino identity at major events.

For instance, he designed the “The Flag” for the 2019 SEA Games held in the Philippines, “Agila” for the 2022 SEA Games held in Vietnam and “Araw” for the 2023 SEA Games held in Cambodia. Each design incorporates modern touches while honoring Filipino traditions. Through these designs, Libiran has been strengthening the barong’s role as a cultural statement, enhancing its visibility and prestige worldwide.

Most recently, he designed “Sinag,” the official barong Team Philippines wore at the opening parade of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which doubled as a celebration of the country’s centennial participation. Inspired by the sun and the Pintados, this barong embodies strength and national pride.

Through his unique designs, Libiran showcases the barong’s versatility, blending traditional elegance with modern flair, making it a proud symbol of Filipino heritage in global events.
