Ponce Veridiano’s “Breath Upon Nature”

The landscape artist celebrated for his ability to merge art, nature and emotion, is set to unveil his latest exhibit, his second since taking a leap from the garden to the canvas, at W/17 in Makati.

By Franchesca L. Tuazon

Hosted at W/17 showroom in Makati, the exhibit runs from January 30 to February 28 and offers a profound exploration of the beauty and tranquility found in the natural world. With over 60 artworks on display, the showcase promises an immersive journey through Veridiano’s unique artistic vision.

The exhibit features a wide range of pieces, from intimate works on paper to large-scale canvases. Each painting shows Veridiano’s deep connection to nature and his intuitive creative process.

Drawing inspiration from the sacred temples of Koyasan, Japan and serene forests surrounding him, Veridiano’s works capture fleeting moments of divine awe — a morning mist, the rustle of bamboo or the intricate patterns of gnarled tree roots.

Veridiano’s art practice is defined by gestural strokes and a vivid palette. For this series, he leans into a contemporary freshness, allowing paint to speak on its own terms.

“I paint based on what I feel and what I experience in life,” he shares. “Actually if it’s possible, I’m going to paint everyday.” The result is a collection that invites viewers to connect with their own emotions as they stand before his work.

A notable feature of “Breath Upon Nature” is the diversity of materials Veridiano uses. From the organic textures of banana paper to the expansive surfaces of large canvases, each choice is intentional. Banana paper, a current favorite of the artist, adds a tactile quality to his paintings, enhancing their raw and natural feel. The interplay of different materials reflects Veridiano’s lifelong habit of experimentation and his innate curiosity as an artist.

“Every painting is an experiment,” Veridiano explains. “I let the materials guide me. The texture of banana paper, for example, gives the piece a certain character that’s impossible to replicate.”

Visitors to the exhibit can expect more than just visual appeal. Veridiano’s paintings resonate with a sense of place and time, transporting viewers to the tranquil landscapes that inspire him. His works convey the sounds of a quiet rain, the glow of the midnight moon and the rhythm of nature’s embrace.

“Breath Upon Nature” is not just a display of Veridiano’s technical skill; it is an invitation to pause and reconnect with the natural world.

For Veridiano, art is a deeply personal and instinctive process. “Nature is my muse,” he says. “Everything I create reflects what I see and feel.”
