Artist Katrina Cuenca turns another year older, another hue bolder in latest show

The visual artist presents “Tetrachromacy,” the continuous evolution in her artistic development, in her annual birthday show with Galerie Joaquin. The exhibition, which ends today, Jan. 31, includes her most recent paintings and sculptures.

The title of this exhibition was inspired by Cuenca’s recent discovery of her unique ability to perceive a broader spectrum of color — tetrachromacy. This expansion of vision extends beyond the range of tones and shades she utilizes as it mirrors her dynamic approach to her craft. The artist’s practice remains constantly evolving as she stays curious and perceptive to elements unique to herself and how she can incorporate these into her art. From her eye for color to her penchant for designer furniture, she continues to discover new realms of creativity as she explores the possibilities of her work.

“A Gentle Soul” and “Voido Rocking Chair”

This collection features Katrina Cuenca’s latest experimentations in material, form and color with several pieces on round canvas. The circular shape, a symbol of wholeness and good fortune, embodies the artist’s desire for new possibilities and creative growth as she enters another season.

“Quietude” and “Harmony”

A particularly striking element of this collection is her use of metal leaf in vibrant new hues. The soft luster of electric blue and blush pink metallic backdrops brilliantly frame Cuenca’s signature abstract figures, creating a captivating interplay of light and color. At the heart of it all, the spiritual sentiment of her works remains the same: to inspire a sense of tranquility and peace, inviting one to pause and reflect.

Ultimately, “Tetrachromacy,” is Cuenca’s ode to her ever-evolving creative vision as she looks forward to the year ahead and the different hues of inspiration on the horizon. Just as a tetrachromat sees colors that others cannot, Cuenca continuously draws inspiration from the various aspects of her life and art that may be overlooked. Inspiration becomes more than just a static moment but a kaleidoscopic array of colorful possibilities that await those open to seeing beyond the surface.
