Last year’s series marked the beginning of what is now a growing movement to revive local sailing while supporting sustainable tourism and marine protection efforts.
BPI Private Wealth launched the second season of its Signature Yacht Race Series. With “Race for the Future of Philippine Sailing” as its theme, the series aims to build on the success of its maiden season.
According to BPI, the 2023 season marked the beginning of what is now a growing movement to revive local sailing while supporting sustainable tourism and marine protection efforts. Organizers hope to continue that momentum this year. BPI Wealth president and CEO Maria Theresa Marcial said, “More than the competition, we have created a movement. A movement with a mission to grow the sailing community, to support marine conservation, and to promote the Philippines as a premier sailing destination in Asia.”
Exciting events that showcase the beauty of the country’s seas and coastal landscapes have also been lined up for the newest Signature Yacht Race Series. Among the key events are the BPI Corregidor Cup in November, the BPI Busuanga Cup in January, the BPI Boracay 200 in February and the BPI Subic Regatta in March.
Successful maiden edition
Twenty-three yachts participated last year, with the top contenders being honored at the Awards Gala. Businessman Jun Villanueva and his yacht Ice 52 Belatrix claimed the overall victory in the IRC Class, while Papaya, skippered by Renie Ticzon, emerged as the champion in the Cruising Class. The Ocean Multihull Category was dominated by Leopard 40 Carino, skippered by Monchu Garcia.
As part of its broader advocacy, BPI Private Wealth has partnered with WWF Philippines to elevate marine conservation efforts. Katherine Custodio, executive director of WWF Philippines, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. “Our shared vision is to preserve the marine biodiversity that defines the Philippines. Through this event, we aim to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to protect our rich marine ecosystems,” she said.
In addition to the races, the series also featured a photo exhibition by journalist and international photographer Guy Nowell, showcasing stunning images from the first season. These photos are to be auctioned off to support marine conservation initiatives.
“Sailing has become more than just a sport. It is reshaping the conversations around marine conservation, deepening our connections to the Philippine seas,” Marcial emphasized. With these efforts, BPI Private Wealth aims not just to promote sailing, but also secure a future where both the sport and the country’s marine ecosystems can thrive.
The series is organized in collaboration with the Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines (ORCP), the Philippine Inter-Island Sailing Foundation (PHINSAF) and Subic Sailing Club. In a joint statement, the organizers noted: “This series not only pushes the boundaries of sailing in the Philippines, but also contributes to the growth of the sport and its influence on coastal communities.” – By Franchesca L.
