Capt. Ri, ‘Men Who Matter’ land in PeopleAsia

PeopleAsia lands a coup with Korean superstar Hyun Bin of Crash Landing on You fame on its cover, and presents its highly anticipated annual roster of “Men Who Matter.”

Now on its second print run due to popular demand, PeopleAsia’s latest issue features not just “Capt. Ri,” but also captains of industry and other realms who are in this year’s “Men Who Matter” list.

PeopleAsia’s “Men who Matter” 2020 Awardees (TOP, FROM LEFT): San Miguel Corp. president and COO Ramon S. Ang, St. Luke’s president and CEO Dr. Arturo dela Peña, BCDA president and CEO Vince Dizon, SM Supermalls president Steven Tan, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, and fashion designer Michael Leyva; (SECOND ROW) Accenture Philippines country managing director Lito Tayag, ABS-CBN broadcaster Alvin Elchico, Buskowitz group founder and CEO James Buskowitz, Kawit Mayor Angelo Aguinaldo, MAV Furniture and Bernhardt’s Eric Po, businessman and Habitat for Humanity volunteer Brian Poe Llamanzares, and MEGA Global CEO William Tiu-Lim

It is Hyun Bin’s first cover on a glossy magazine in the Philippines. Produced in cooperation with Smart Communications, the cover story treats readers to rare photos of the actor, and takes them behind the scenes of the Korean superstar’s much-talked about Giga Life campaign for the country’s fastest mobile data provider.

Also being recognized as a special awardee is the MVP Group, led by its chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan. The MVP Group, through its companies such as Metro Pacific Investments Corp., PLDT Smart, Philex Mining and Meralco, among others, has mobilized and distributed almost P 200 million worth of support, early in the fight against COVID-19. “We have to be here for the long haul. This is not just because we are in front of the camera. Our help should be for the long term, also,” said MVP, whose companies are estimated to have advanced more than P 10 billion in taxes to help aid the government in its time of need.

Leading this year’s list of “Men Who Matter” awardees is San Miguel Corp. president and COO Ramon S. Ang, whose 130-year old company’s COVID-19 response initiatives have amounted to P 13.09 billion as of end-May. “At this point, what is more important are lives, not money. We can make money again, but life, once you lose it, it’s gone forever,” he said.

Another “captain” on this year’s “Men Who Matter” list is Mega Global CEO William Tiu Lim, the man behind the country’s number one sardines brand, which has earmarked at least P50 million to help aid frontliners and underprivileged Filipinos alike in the time of the pandemic.

Captains of local government and government institutions are also being lauded for their steadfast leadership in the time of crisis. Among them are SM Supermalls president Steven Tan, who showed steadfast leadership for the retail giant in the time of COVID-19; St. Luke’s president and CEO Dr. Arturo dela Peña who continues to raise the bar in one of the country’s premier medical facilities; and former actor and model Richard Gomez, who has showed his leadership chops as mayor of Ormoc City, which registered zero COVID-19 cases until recently.

They are joined by Accenture country managing director Lito Tayag, who inspires with his story as a farmer’s son who rose to the top of his field; broadcast journalist Alvin Elchico, whose day-to-day work as a broadcast journalist continues to touch the lives of consumers in the Philippines; and Vince Dizon, who contributes greatly to nation building as deputy chief implementer of the government’s COVID-19 response, president and CEO of the Bases and Conversion  Development Authority (BCDA), and as a presidential adviser for flagship programs and projects – all at the same time.

Also being recognized as “Men Who Matter” awardees are Kawit Mayor Emilio Angelo Aguinaldo, who donated his salary and sold his car to help his municipality raise more funds for its constituents; fashion designer and humanitarian Michael Leyva, who came to the aid of frontliners by designing and donating thousands of PPEs; solar energy pioneer James Buskowitz, the 30 year-old founder and CEO of Energy Renewables Asia; furniture entrepreneur Eric Po of Mav and Bernhardt; and rising businessman and Habitat for Humanity volunteer Brian Poe Llamanzares, who is also the youngest chief of staff in the Philippine Senate.
