Art critic Cid Reyes described Gil Corcuera as “one of the country’s most interesting sculptors.” Quite a number of people have used his works as inspiration, but no one quite captures the essence of this artist’s technical mastery and unique whimsicality.
Sculptor Gil Corcuera, former art director of one of the country’s leading advertising agencies, will again share with the public the latest products of his wit and imagination at an exhibit at the Galerie Joaquin from May 4 to 13. Described by fans and critics as “kinetic sculpture,” Corcuera’s pieces are known to incorporate a moving part that makes each piece more whimsical and, in a way, interactive.
In their motionless state, the pieces, thanks to his use of attractive colors, are already eye-catchers in themselves. When they move, they become brilliant displays of the artist’s precision and skill at balancing tension, weight and motion. Beyond their technical mastery though, Corcuera’s pieces manage to evoke awe, humor and whimsy from those who see it up close. His art is almost guaranteed to coax a smile, even outright laughter from his audience.
