You get to choose your friends, but you don’t get to choose your family. How often have we heard this universal truism before? For better or for worse, you have to take everything that comes with this random set of people you are born into. Then again, this mindset has produced people who have grown up to become presidents, dictators, CEOs, drug lords, doctors, junkies, law enforcers, criminals, poets, artists, scholars, hippies, consumers, philanthropists, misanthropes and so on. Basically, anybody has come from somewhere, even if not everybody stayed there. We don’t like it all the time, but we always feel that tug of invisible string that connects us to our parents and siblings wherever we go.
Here are some of the reasons why family is the best and worst thing that could happen to you or to anybody:
BEST: They will be on your side when everybody else is against you.
You mess with one, you mess with all of us.
WORST: Everybody gangs up on you.
Good cop and bad cop? Forget it? Everybody’s on your case once they’ve chased everybody else away.
BEST: Family will take care of you when you need them.
When you’re down on your luck, mom and dad got your back.
WORST: You have to take care of Family when they need you.
Sometimes you’re just not equipped to handle the mess.
BEST: They will take you as you are.
They have no choice.
WORST: They won’t stop trying to improve on you.
Because of love.
BEST: Home is where you are loved the most.
Kids know this too well.
WORST: Home is where you act the worst.
