Hidilyn Diaz bags Philippines’ first gold at Tokyo Olympics

Diaz made history and won the country’s first Olympic gold by topping the women’s 55kg weightlifting division Monday at the Tokyo International Forum in Japan. After cinching silver in the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first Filipino gold in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta — she now brings home the gold. The Olympic Gold. Hidilyn was one of PeopleAsia magazine’s “People of the Year” in 2019, and we knew even then that we struck gold.

According to TV 5, “Diaz is also the first two-time Olympic medalist in 89 years, or ever since swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso nabbed a pair of bronze medals in the 1928 Amsterdam and 1932 Los Angeles Games.”
