León Gallery: Alfonso Ossorio’s 100th Birthyear Exhibit

By GIAN CARLO LUIGI ROJAS |

On his 100th birthday, artist Alfonso Ossorio is remembered through his art, thanks to León Gallery’s Afflictions of Glory. Curated by Liliane Rejante Manahan and Lisa Guerrero Nakpil, the exhibit includes paintings, sketches and mixed medium pieces from the famed artist.

Alfonso Ossorio is debatably considered today as the most prolific and creative artist to arise from the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1950s.During his time, his contemporaries (who included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, among others) overshadowed him.

Always exciting, hardly ordinary, Ossorio and his works embody one of the most lasting stories in modern art.

Unknown to many though, the artist struggled when his family sent him overseas to study. Overcome by sadness, he romanticized about staying with his family, and such emotions led him to his artistic awakening.

Born in Aug 2, 1916 in Manila, the son of Don Miguel José Ossorio and Doña Maria Paz Yangco was heir to a massive shipping and sugar fortune. At his young age, he was sent to English and American boarding schools such as Harvard and the Rhode Island School of Design – a crucial turn into the life of this artist.
