Manila-born baby girl is world’s “8 billionth baby”

The global population just hit the eight-billion mark with the birth of the “symbolic 8 billionth baby” in the early hours of November 15 at a hospital in Tondo.

A baby girl born in Tondo, Manila on Tuesday, November 15, has been named the world’s “symbolic 8 billionth person.”

Baby Vinice Mabansag was born at Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Delpan, Tondo at 1:29 a.m, according to the National Capital Region division of the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM). The mother, Maria Margarette Villorente, 26, gave birth to her child via normal delivery.

POPCOM-NCR shared the good news online and posted photos of the mother and her child on its official Facebook account.

“The world welcomes Vinice Mabansag of Delpan, Tondo as the symbolic 8 billionth baby from the Philippines,” the caption read.

In an official statement to mark the historical milestone, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that it “is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet.”

According to UN’s previous projection report, the world’s population is estimated to breach the eight-billion mark in mid-November this year.

The agency added that the global population could increase to 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.–Ma. Angelica Demegillo
