ManilArt continues with its work of promoting Filipino artists this October

Now on 13th year, ManilART continues to innovate in its bid to become the country’s leading national art fair. This year, it returns to its roots with the theme “Continuing Legacies,” which will run from October 13 to 17 at the SM Aura Premier’s SMX Convention Center in Taguig.

Having staged its first edition during a pandemic last year, ManilArt will resume its regular schedule this year while being mindful of fast-changing events and existing health protocols. It’s also extending its reach through various satellite sites beyond Metro Manila. They are Likhang Silangan in Rizal, Tarlac Art in Tarlac and Balai Kalipay in Mindanao.

Balai Kalipay in Malagos, Mindanao

The satellite exhibit, “Likhang Silangan: The Art EASTory of Rizal,” will run from October 10 to 23 at Angkla Art Gallery. Considered as one of the cradles of Philippine art, the province of Rizal offers art lovers a veritable showcase of some of the country’s best visual artists, including the late National Artists Carlos “Botong” Francisco and Vicente Manansala, and 19th-century artist Juan “Tandang Juancho” Senson.

“Tarlac Art,” which will be held from October 1 to 22 at Diwa ng Tarlac in Tarlac City, is beginning to forge its own legacy. This much-anticipated endeavor by Tarlac’s provincial government will be the first visual arts exhibit of its kind exclusively featuring artists from the province.

Balai Kalipay, which is co-founded by visual artist Kublai Millan, is a museum gallery in the picturesque Malagos mountains. Its particular advocacy is to showcase the indigenous art of contemporary Mindanaoan artists. The showcase will be a joint undertaking between ManilArt and the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Cultural Diplomacy Unit.

Finally, in solidarity with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, ManilART will also join in the quincentennial commemorations by featuring activities and exhibits of the National Quincentennial Committee and hosting the NQC-ManilART Lounge. Artists, advocates and enthusiasts are invited to take part in the continuing dialogue now mostly on a virtual platform.
