Her face may have been hailed as one of the most beautiful in the universe but Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach definitely has no qualms about covering it up for protection. And she believes frontliners should, too. In fact, the Miss Universe 2015 winner has spent the past few weeks urging her followers to donate funds for masks that will protect health workers in their battle against COVID-19.
And when Queen P calls, not just a few answer. In fact, Pia’s donation drive has successfully raised nearly P1 million through crowd funding by April 28. With this, she and her team were able to distribute about 42,000 pieces of N88 masks, and 1,000 pieces of Kn95 to over 30 hospitals across Metro Manila and Luzon. The project has also helped provide food and other essentials to frontliners on duty.
“Our goal is to protect our health workers from having COVID-19 by giving them the needed protection. We initially planned for 25,000 medical masks that are approximately worth P 600,000, but we’ve seen that there are more health workers in the frontline who need our help and we have to protect and take care of them in our own little way,” she explains.
Pia decided to help after she read reports on the challenges that frontliners faced, amid the growing number of patients due to the pandemic. Known for her penchant for taking on worthwhile causes, the beauty queen is also a staunch advocate for HIV awareness and uses her various social media platforms to gather support for her beneficiaries.
