Randy Lazaro draws inspiration from a tableau of colorful lessons

Every grand arrangement this event stylist creates is so much more than just a display of his artistry. Rather, each one is a virtual canvas that reflects his personal journey and values.

In the world of event styling, where perfection is measured to the last petal and vase, Randy Lazaro’s works certainly stand out. And while it’s easy to be captivated and awed by the magical backdrops he has created for weddings and high-profile events through the years, this native of Samar reminds us that they are all products of hard work and passion. No shortcuts. The same can be said of his journey to the top. Before the dazzling tablescapes and grand wedding setups that now bear his signature style, Randy, too, was once a nameless young man who had to juggle numerous jobs in order to make a living. Yet what he lacked in resources, he made up for in inspiration — much of which came from his love for his mother, Erlinda, whom he considers as the cornerstone of his success.

One-way ticket

Growing up in a small town in Samar, he faced the harsh realities of life early on. “Without a father, I stepped into that role for my family,” Randy tells PeopleAsia. And while he was more than happy to take on odd jobs as a teenager, he also couldn’t help but wonder how the rest of his days would be, should he choose to do the same things in his island province.

“Then, one day, it just happened. I took a deep breath and decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone, if only to make sure that I could provide a better life for my family,” he says. Without so much as another word, teenaged Randy boarded a bus to Metro Manila. But unlike many others who never looked back, Randy, to this day, does. “It may have been a hard life, but I know that it was all part of the journey. I wouldn’t be who I am now if I wasn’t who I was as that young man in Samar,” he says with a grateful smile.

With little more than an undefined dream and the determination to succeed, he wasted no time upon arriving in the big city. “I was a working student, a Math teacher by day, and a call center agent by night,” Randy tells us.

While juggling multiple jobs, destiny found its way to Randy. Somewhat detecting his creativity and flair for tablescaping and design, a colleague asked him to style her daughter’s debut. Despite having no portfolio or experience, he embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly.

Randy Lazaro unwraps his creativity every time he starts working on a project.

“It was the push I needed,” Randy says, reflecting on how that one event ignited his passion and set him on a
new path. Along with the young lady who turned 18 on that momentous night, Randy’s dream also made
its debut, so to speak.

It was no longer just about providing for his family. Instead, he wanted to become a successful events designer first, so that he could deliver on his promise. More than a decade later, Randy now sits on top of his eponymous Randy Lazaro Events, his vessel for marrying sophistication with cultural depth. Whether he’s crafting intimate receptions for stars like Angel Locsin or grand ceremonies such as Ellen Adarna’s open-field wedding to Derek Ramsay, Randy’s works always carry his trademark elegance and authenticity.

One of his most memorable projects, he recounts, was a Siargao beach wedding. “The setting inspired me to balance the island’s laid-back charm with an elevated design,” he says. Another unforgettable event was a grand, dragon and phoenix-themed wedding at Okada Manila, where he crafted an opulent setting that could easily have gone into garish territory in the wrong hands.

A mix of the old and the new, modern and Filipiniana is reflected in these two table settings.

“My approach is a blend of innovation and polished execution,” Randy explains. “I strive to elevate my designs while adding a unique flair to common ideas. Adaptability is key.”

This philosophy, paired with meticulous planning and a deep understanding of his clients’ objectives, has established Randy as a trusted name in the industry.

Family first

Despite his many achievements, Randy’s ultimate joy lies in his relationship with his mother. She is the driving force behind his every endeavor, for she represents the sacrifices and strength that paved the way for his success. “Despite our humble beginnings, she inspired me to reach for the stars,” he says, adding that she also instilled in him perseverance, discernment, hope and humility.

It is therefore unsurprising to learn that one of his happiest memories was when he surprised her mother with a new home in Manila.

As Randy reflects on Christmases he had celebrated with his family as a child, he remembers nights that were filled — not with bountiful feasts or ornate tablescapes — but with overflowing love.

And while the Lazaros, including his siblings who are now based abroad, have more on their table these days, Randy emphasizes that their Christmas celebration wouldn’t be complete without two things: gratitude and unity. “In the end, these are the ties that bind us closer together, not just our success, but the value we place in each other,” he says.

The love isn’t limited to the four corners of their home either. He now aspires to give back to the community and plans to mentor aspiring event stylists, so that they, too, can realize their full potential.

“I’ve experienced the depths of having nothing, that’s why I’d like to encourage my protégés to dream big, work hard and embrace every opportunity to learn. Take risks, for your true potential lies in your willingness to try. Be confident in your craft, yet remain humble,” he concludes.
