Rustan’s pays tribute to the late Criselda Lontok with a retrospective exhibit and auction of her designs

A talented designer and stylish looker herself, she also made a lasting impression among friends and loyal clients as a kind, gracious and soft-spoken soul.

In her long and fruitful career as a fashion designer, the late Criselda Lontok eventually became an iconic name in local fashion, dressing up stylish and accomplished women in various fields. A hands-on designer, she was known to handpick fabrics herself, meticulously designing and overseeing the creation of looks that would make up her latest collection. A stylish looker herself, Criselda, who passed away two years ago, also made a lasting impression among friends and loyal clients as a kind, gracious and soft-spoken soul.

As a tribute to the designer, Rustan’s management and Criselda’s children thought of holding the “Criselda Retrospective.” The series of  events, with major sponsors HSBC and Givenchy, celebrate her enduring legacy and contribution to Philippine fashion.

The series kicked off recently with the opening of an exhibi at the 2nd floor of Rustan’s Makati, which offers glimpses of Lontok’s enduring artistry. The retrospective is composed of a curated selection of her timeless masterpieces over the years.

Following the week-long exhibit, the spotlight turns to the “Criselda Retrospective” auction. León Gallery will host the exclusive gathering at the 3rd floor of Rustan’s Makati on September 21

, where it will auction off the designer’s one-of vintage dresses for the benefit of Bantay Bata 163.

Up for auction are elegant ball gowns adorned with the timeless rose motif in lilac and black, three-piece ensembles showcasing embossed oriental hummingbirds as well as the French fleur-de-lis, and tent dresses crafted from solid shantung or adorned with striking black polka dots on vibrant torrero red fabric.

Criselda’s journey with Rustan’s as one of its best-selling in-house designers began when she was initially hired as a buyer and merchandiser. Criselda, then already a young wife and mother, believed in her potential to make a difference in the world. The late Glecy Tantoco, Rustan’s founding matriarch, became her mentor as she navigated her way through the world of high-end fashion and retail.

It didn’t take long for Criselda to reinvent herself as a designer. Soon enough, her in-house designs for Rustan’s became must-haves. Women embraced her creations not only for big events but also for everyday occasions. From day dresses to afternoon ensembles, cocktail attire and exquisite evening gowns, her creations easily resonated with an appreciative clientele who had utmost faith in Criselda’s taste.

In the world of fashion, Criselda’s legacy is a testament to timeless design, impeccable craftsmanship and a deep connection with the women she dressed up.

Tessa Prieto hosts the exhibit’s opening at the 2nd floor of Rustan’s Makati. An auction of Criselda’s vintage dresses above will be facilitated by Leon Gallery on September 21 also at Rustan’s Makati. Proceeds from the auction will go to Bantay Bata 163.
