Met Gala, also known as the Oscars of the fashion world, happens to be one of the most anticipated annual events in May. Spearheaded by Vogue and a number of New York-based organizations, it’s an annual gathering that brings together the most prominent names in fashion, film, music and the arts at the Met Costume Institute. Dressed in the most fashion-forward and most provocative ensembles, celebrities of the day preen and air kiss before the cameras while doing the red carpet, earning for the event another fitting monicker: the Oscars of the East Coast.
Underneath all that glamour and glitter, though, the main objective of organizers is to encourage donations, primarily for the Met’s upkeep, from members of New York’s high society. The benefit has different themes every year, depending on the museum’s latest exhibition.
This year, the exhibition’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” As confusing as it may sound, it merely means basking on being over-the-top, exaggeration and embracing the humor of being extra.
