John Prats: Going the Distance

He used to be just like us in our younger, more carefree days, finding himself in relatable adolescent situations immortalized by our favorite after-school programming back in the day. Now he’s a father, ready to raise days-old daughter Lily Feather, impart lessons he’s learned and prepare her for everything a lady like her will inevitably experience.

Here’s a throwback of what John was like, pre-fatherhood.

Actor, host and dancer John Prats has been in show business for over 20 years. The older brother of actress Camille Prats, he recalls that as a kid, he got jealous when he saw his sister on TV for the first time. As childish as it may sound, it was the start of something good. He wasn’t supposed to audition for Ang TV, the youth–oriented variety show many of the Philippines’ current artists started in. But he was at the right place at the right time and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now 32, the former tween star of ABS-CBN’s Talent Center, which eventually became Star Magic, gives us a glimpse into how it all started. “Cams and I went through seven or eight auditions. Since we passed all, we felt it was our destiny. And until now we’re still doing this. We’re so blessed,” he shares. And early on, John learned that the secret to staying on top is actually not caring whether he stays on top. It’s longevity.

“Lasting this long is the achievement I’m most proud of. It’s easy to be famous. All you need to be is good-looking and have a little talent. The hardest part is maintaining your status.” In an industry with a lot of ups and down, John knows how to enjoy the ride. “You can’t be always successful in your journey. That’s why you need patience. Once the opportunity is there, seize it.”

Aside from finally cementing his status as an award-winning artist one day, John wants to grow the real estate business he manages with his father, one that delves in the building and selling of townhouses. Eventually, of course, John wants to start a family.

On the world’s a stage, John is one of those players working the hardest. And that’s why, in the long run, there is no finish line for him. — MAT
