Start your holiday feasts right with these delicious homemade nutmilk recipes

‘Tis the season to be merry!

That’s right! Christmas is right around the corner — 81 days to go to be precise — and everyone knows it’s the season to indulge and possibly pack on those inevitable two or three pounds. Weizel Gulfan — nutritionist and owner of Cocogreen Co — knows this all too well and gives us healthier alternatives for the most festive time of the year.

To start, instead of gulping down glasses of eggnog, check out her simple recipes below for nutmilk — a delicious, nutritious creamy alternative to dairy milk drinks. It’s a product made of sprouted pressed nuts that are rich in protein, magnesium and iron that are easily absorbed by the body. Better yet, nutmilk is free from the antibiotics, hormones and acid present in cow’s milk making it a delectable, healthy alternative to dairy. Enjoy it plain or flavored with matcha, or chocolate!

Original Nutmilk

Tasting almost like ice cream without the dairy (and the guilt!), this drink makes it easy to make the switch from milk to healthier alternatives that are simple enough to make in your home. You can experiment with trying out different flavors once you learn how to make the nutmilk base by following the simple recipe below.

Ingredients

  • 1/8 cup soaked pili nuts
  • 1/8 cup soaked almonds
  • 1/8 cup soaked cashews
  • 800 ml filtered water
  • 1/4 cup date syrup
  • 1 teaspoon maca
  • 1/8 spoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla bean

Directions

  1. Blend soaked pili nuts, almonds and cashews
  2. Add date syrup, maca, sea salt and vanilla bean
  3. Blend all ingredients
  4. Strain
  5. Chill and serve cold

Note: After you make the nutmilk, make sure you consume it as soon as possible, as leaving it overnight will make the milk stale. If you plan to consume it the next day, make sure you place it in a sealed container and leave it in the freezer. You can still enjoy it after defrosting it the next day. If you plan to keep it longer, it needs to be pasteurized.
