When we hear “cognac,” we usually think of the clear crystal bottles filled with rich brown liquid inside our parents’ bar cabinets. But this year, Hennessy – the world’s largest cognac producer – is bringing you a bottle that deserves a pedestal in any contemporary art museum with its new VSOP Privilege limited edition bottle by Milan-based art duo Carnovsky (Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla).

The new bottle design is patterned after Carnovsky’s RGB Project, a new process of creating, enhancing and replicating images using the digital world’s three primary colors – red, green and blue – to create dynamic and visually striking combinations of 17th century illustrations and digital landscapes. For VSOP Privilege, Rugi and Quintanilla took inspiration from the commune of Cognac and the fundamental elements of cognac making, namely the sun, earth, grapes and water, as well as Hennessy’s coat of arms to create a layered image that narrates the story of the company on the bottle. They use red, green and blue overlays that harmoniously coexist to the naked eye, but carry images that are only visible when viewed through a colored filter.
The red overlay represents the energy and the forces involved in creating VSOP Privilege, and highlights the images of the sun, moon and time. The green, on the other hand, symbolizes nature and its fruits, while the blue portrays the dreamscape of a sensorial journey when tasting VSOP Privilege. This overlay uses the image of a sailing vessel and a crown as a nod to King George IV, whose order in 1817 led to the creation of VSOP Privilege.
